(Melbourne: Fergusson & Mitchell, circa 1890). Sm. 4to. Orig. illust. wrapper ribbon tried as issued (slightly soiled and marked). Complete with 12 full-page plates. Ferguson 6181. NOTE: The letterpress is signed at the end: D.M. i.e. Donald Macdonald, Victorian journalist and writer. This is established in an article by Dr. Brooke Nicholls (Melbourne "Herald", 18th July, 1936). He relates how Macdonald told him that when travelling to report a political meeting he was introduced to Kipling by Alfred Deakin: They talked of Lorne, and then, or at a later date, Macdonald gave Kipling a book. Kipling's trip to Lorne took place some time between November 20 and 30, 1891. He spent a day and a night in the town and voiced his impressions of the scenery, ferns and hot-wood clematis in verse. Dr. Nicholls satisfied himself that the book Macdonald gave to Kipling was the above "Pen and Ink Sketches at Lorne".
