NOTE: Between November 1942 and October 1943 some 60,000 Allied prisoners-of-war, including at least 13,000 Australians, constructed a railway over a stretch of 412 kilometres from Kanchanaburi in Thailand toThanbuyzayat in Burma. Some 12,000 POWs' including 2,800 Australians died at the hands of the Japanese building the "Death Railway".
